The goal of the South African Pen Pal project is to make students in America and South Africa aware of each other's cultural, political, and health issues.
Over 336,000 adults and about 50,000 children died from AIDS in 2006. Is our that we can teach the children we mentor ( and they in turn teach their pen pals) to make the right kinds of friends and be in the right kinds of relationships to avoid getting infected with HIV. We also hope to teach them not to discriminate against the ill ( the HIV victims).
As members of the Student Movement, we will make either weekly or biweekly trips to Centennial Place Elementary School to mentor andd tutor their students. The students that we will mentor will in turn write one monthly letter to their Pen Pals in South Africa. These students will gain academic role models and the students in South Africa will gain life-changing friends.
