Several volunteers and Ameer recently traveled to Kenya to volunteer with Fadhili community, a non-profit group in Kenya. They distributed food and other supplies at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp called Vumilia in Eastern Kenya. They were horrified at the poor conditions that were ubiquitous at the camp. Individuals were surviving off of bare rations and the women of the camp were often resorting to prostitution to feed their families. Whole families were drinking from jerry-cans that were previously used to store battery acid and other harmful liquids. Large families were cramped into dusty, small tents that were littered with chicken feces and other refuse.
Several volunteers combined their money to purchase the food and the other supplies. However, we decided that a weekly food program was not enough- the camp resident needed long-term, self-sustaining wealth that will help lift them from poverty and provide a self-satisfaction that can only arise from the knowledge that you can feed your family. We decided to purchase land by Vumilia in order to build a maize mill upon it. The mill will provide several long term jobs for the camp residents.
Our weekly food program and mill project require donations to keep it running. Volunteers and other concerned individuals have already reached into their pockets and their hearts and contributed hundreds. However, the project costs $3,300, not including the weekly food project.
We need your help to make sure this project is successful. We are in the process of setting up a non-profit bank account for the Vumilia mill, but until then you can donate through paypal.com.
